We have the inner solar system which has Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. These are closest to the sun and are called the terrestrial planets simply because they have very solid rocky surfaces.

The outer planets, also known as gas giants, are much larger and made mostly of hydrogen, helium and other gases – these planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
